Boeri Lake

The hiking trail to the Boeri Lake takes about 45 minutes. I recommend taking twice that long. Along with the Freshwater Lake, it’s one of the prettiest, yet infrequently walked trails in Dominica. Around each twist and turn there’s a dreamy forest scene of lush rainforest foliage and meandering trail, all dappled in sunlight. I always hear, and frequently see, hummingbirds and mountain whistlers. Today I saw a very rare blue-headed hummingbird. Heliconias are everywhere, lichen-covered giant tree ferns abound, and there’s always the chance you’ll bump into an agouti foraging for fallen forest fruit. Pick a sunny day and head up there with a picnic. And take it slowly.
