Paul Crask – Biography

My name is Paul Crask. I am a Bradt Travel Guides author, freelance feature writer and photojournalist currently based on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

I was born in England in 1965 and grew up in Lancashire and Yorkshire. I graduated from Leeds University in 1988 with an honours degree in German Language & Literature. I enjoyed student life and was an active member of the Leeds Student newspaper team, writing film and theatre reviews. In 1986 I also spent time studying at the Karl Marx University, Leipzig, in what was then East Germany. It was a fascinating time. After graduating from Leeds I went to Japan to work as an English teacher in Yamaguchi prefecture, southern Honshu. I lived there for two years before setting off on my travels, backpacking around south east Asia and then on to north America.

Back in England I tried my hand at a career and became an Information & Technology development manager in a large corporate law firm in London. It was an important time for me and I was lucky enough to meet and work with some great people. During this period in England, I met Celia who was from Dominica. We travelled there on holiday year after year before finally deciding to drop out for good and embark on a radical lifestyle change. In 2005 we packed everything up and moved to the Caribbean.

I have written two guide books for Bradt Travel Guides: Dominica (first published in 2008, second edition due 2011) and Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique (first published in 2009, second edition due 2012). I write freelance features for magazines such as Caribbean Beat, scripts for short films such as Unbeaten Paths, and Nom Fwige, and am a freelance photographer, editor and copy writer.
