My name is Paul Crask. I am a freelance writer and editor, Bradt Travel Guides author, underwater videographer, and amateur photographer currently living on the Caribbean island of Dominica.
I was born in England in 1965 and grew up in Lancashire and Yorkshire. I graduated from Leeds University in 1988 with an honours degree in German Language & Literature. I enjoyed student life and was an active member of the Leeds Student newspaper team, writing film and theatre reviews. In 1986 I also spent time studying at the Karl Marx University, Leipzig, in what was then East Germany. It was a fascinating time. After graduating from Leeds I went to Japan to work as an English teacher in Yamaguchi prefecture, southern Honshu. I lived there for two years before setting off on my travels, backpacking around south east Asia and then on to north America.
Back in England I tried my hand at a career and became an Information & Technology development manager in a large corporate law firm in London. It was an important time for me and I was lucky enough to meet and work with some great people. During this period in England, I met Celia who was from Dominica. We travelled there on holiday year after year before finally deciding to drop out for good and embark on a radical lifestyle change. In 2005 we packed everything up and moved to the Caribbean.
I have written two guide books for Bradt Travel Guides: Dominica (published in 2008) and Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique (published in 2009). I write freelance features for magazines and websites such as Strabon-Caraibes, Caribbean Beat, Islands and Caribbean Homes & Lifestyle and I wrote the marketing copy, features and establishment profiles for Dominica Food & Drink 2008 and 2009 magazines. I also wrote the script for and co-directed Dominica’s official ‘hiking and adventure’ tourism film, Unbeaten Paths. I like to go hiking and scuba diving (I am a PADI instructor). I am also a keen photographer, film maker and underwater videographer. I enjoy reading, watching films, and listening to music. Though Dominica is my adopted home, I still have a passion for travel and I am always itching to see what is over the next horizon.
